THE HOYT FAMILY Researched by Louise Maxine Varisco
Register Report updated January, 2010 |
There seems to have been misinformation on the ancestors of the immigrant Simon Hoyt. Hoyt’s Issue, which was published for many years by Roy Olson, engaged Robin Bush, a researcher in Somerset, England, to find information on the ancestors of Simon Hoyt. No record could be found of Simon’s marriage to Deborah Stowers in Upwey, England. After much research he found records on the Stowers family, which not only did not show a marriage, but didn’t even show a Deborah. He feels the information for Simon Hoyt and Deborah Stowers marriage at Upwey was made up because Simon Hoyt and Nicholas Stowers both immigrated in the same year, and both finally settled at Charlestown, MA. See Hoyt’s Issue, 360 Watson Rd., Paducah, KY 42003. Fall 1994, Spring 1995, Spring 1996, and Spring 2000, for more details on how he came to this conclusion.
My maternal grandmother was Ethelyn (Hoyt) Howard. While researching the Hoyt family I discovered that I have a total of four Hoyt ancestors who descend from the immigrant, Simon Hoyt.
Ethelyn Hoyt married Dewitt Howard
Abigail Hoyt married Samuel Jessup
Harriet Hoyt married Nathan Gould Hoyt
Mary Hoyt married Thomas Hoyt
There are various spellings for the Hoyt name in the early records--especially Hayt and Hait. I have used only the Hoyt spelling.
I included all known children for the following generations: 4th , 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th. I did not include all the known children in the other generations. They can be found in A Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight, and Hight Families by David W. Hoyt. Providence Press Co. Boston: Henry Hoyt 1871 which is found in most large genealogy libraries. I have a copy of this book and can help you if you can’t find it.
When giving place of birth, marriage, death, etc. the usual format is to list the city, county, state, and country in that order. If one or more is not known then commas are inserted. For example: If all that I know is that someone was born in the state of New York it will be recorded this way (, , NY, US).
I would enjoy hearing from descendants of any Hoyts. I would especially like to hear from any descendants of Nathan Gould Hoyt and his wife Harriet Hoyt who came to Ohio in 1852. #53 Henry Sanford Hoyt is the only son who could still have a male line of Hoyts.

Notes for
Simon Hoyt and Wives
Marshwood was Joan StoodlieÕs
home parish and Simon Hoyt apparently came from elsewhere to marry her and then
they left the parish and lived in West Hatch. West Hatch (Somerset Co.) and Marshwood
(Dorset, Co.) are about 20 miles apart.3 Three of SimonÕs children with
Jane either stayed in England or died young.
Simon
Hoyt arrived in 1628/1629. It
usually took about two months to reach America from England. He probably landed in Salem, MA. If so, soon after that he moved to Charlestown, MA. Then
about 1633 he moved to Dorchester, MA. In 1635 he moved to Scituate MA. All four of these towns are close to Boston, MA. Then he moved west across the state of
MA to the Connecticut River and was one of the first settlers to live in Windsor, CT. If you go to Windsor, CT today you will see a monument that
has the names of the early settlers and Simon HoytÕs name is there. In 1646 Simon moved to Fairfield, CT, and in 1649 he moved to Stamford, CT, where he died in
1657. He was one of the first
settlers in seven different towns in MA and CT. In Dorchester there is a street known as Hoyt Street. In Windsor his place was called HoytÕs
Meadow.2
Simon
and his family would have suffered the hardships endured by the first settlers
at Charlestown and Dorchester--the sufferings of the winter; the conspiracy of
the Indians to cut off the English until a fort was completed; and the perils
of pestilence and famine when they were compelled to live on clams, muscles,
and fish.
What
experiences Simon must have had, being an early settler in seven different
towns in New England! Scarcely was
he settled in one place before he gave up his home, with all its comforts, and
started to subdue a new portion of the wilderness. Most of his children seem to have shared the spirit of their
father. Twenty years after his
death no one bearing the name of Hoyt was left in any of these seven towns,
except Stamford. The hardy and
courageous character of the family is shown, not only by their frequent changes
of residence, but by the fact that in Windsor they lived away from the other
settlers.2

On the way towards Canada, provisions became so scarce that Dea. Hoyt Ôperished of hunger near the lower Cohos,Õ in the vicinity of what is now Newbury, Vt., May or
June, 1704.
Some of his descendants say that he was compelled to carry a large
bundle, and that he must also carry his youngest child, or see her killed by
the Indians; but he fainted under the double burden. His wife endured all the horrors of captivity, and returned
to Deerfield. She
afterwards m. Dea. Nathaniel Rice, and removed

Notes for Benjamin Hoyt
ÒBenjamin
was about 11 yrs. old when Deerfield was attacked. Tradition says that, hearing the screams in the night, his
fright led him to jump from a window and hide in a corn-bin, where he lay till
morning. Then, finding all gone
but the slain, he wished he had been taken with the others. Some accounts say that he removed with
his mother, after her return, to Wallingford, Ct. others state that he went to
Norwalk, Ct., and remained there for some time with his fatherÕs
relatives. Perhaps he may have
been in both places. Afterwards,
he with 20 or 30 others commenced a settlement at Ridgefield, 12 miles north of
Norwalk, where he afterwards resided.
His descendants say that he gave his coat and hat towards his part of
the pay in purchasing the land of the Indians. From the Ridgefield records we learn that ÔBenj. Hayt, of Norwalk, late of Deerfield, Mass.,Õ bought of
(2662) Daniel Hayt, of Norwalk, July 7, 1713, for 26
pounds, one-half the right of Jonathan Rockwell in Ridgefield township, which

Notes for Nathan Gould Hoyt
and Harriet
A
copy of a letter written by Harriet Hoyt, wife of Nathan Gould Hoyt,
to
her son William Hoyt Sr.
Elyria
September
6, 1886
I
thought I would drop you a line as I have not seen you
for a long time. I came home not
feeling very well and have not gained very much yet and I wish to say there is
some pieces of silver which my father gave me and which I wish to devide with my boyes as the girls
had some silver spoons when they left their childhood home. the silverware
that I have had for years when I am gone I wish to have devided
with all of the children but the pieces that was my fathers is marked with his and mothers initials S
H H. I
will send you the old sugar bowl and tongs which your
grandfather made over 80 years since.
they were made in North Carolina and as you are
the oldest and a Hoyt I will give it to you and hope it will ever be kept in
the Hoyt family. I enjoyed my
visit very much. had a very pleasant time. I left Boston thinking to spend some time in York state and
when I got there I felt so bad I thought I would come home while I could and
have not felt very well since. had no misshapes on the road, left all well, I do not know
when you will get this. hope to see or
hear from you soon. with love to all from your Mother.
Notes
about the letter:
Harriet Hoyt was born in CT in 1810. She died 1893 in Wellington, OH. She married Nathan Gould Hoyt who was
born in CT in 1809 and died 1879 in Elyria, OH. Harriet and Nathan Gould were distant cousins, descending
from the immigrant, Simon Hoyt who came to America about 1628.
HarrietÕs father, who
made the sugar bowl and tongs was Samuel R. Hoyt. He was born in 1754, probably in CT. He married Elizabeth Olmsted in
1840. I have no record of him
living in North Carolina. Because
he was a silversmith I wonder if he apprenticed himself to someone in N. C.
The
sugar bowl and tongs were handed down from William Hoyt, Sr. to Williams Hoyt,
Jr., to Ethelyn Hoyt (only child of Williams Hoyt,
Jr.), to Arlene Howard, to Louise Varisco.
Of
the 5 remaining children of Harriet and Nathan Gould Hoyt:
Hannah
and Mary were girls—end of Hoyt name.
Norton
married, but had no children—end of Hoyt name.
Samuel
married and had two daughters. One
never married and the other married but I canÕt find a record of any
children—end of Hoyt name.
Henry
married and ended up in California.
He had a son whose marriage and children I cannot find. The only possibility of the ÒHoytÓ name
being carried on from Harriet and Nathan would be from Henry.
HarrietÕs
daughter, Mary, was married and living in Boston at the time this letter was
written. Most likely this is the
reason she was visiting Boston at the age of 74. Harriet and Nathan came to Ohio from New York in 1852. This is probably why she was stopping
there on the way home. They still
had relatives there.
I
cannot find any of the silverware with the initials S H H. This would probably be the silverware
that my grandmother said was buried during the War of 1812.

Varisco

Obituary:
EZEKIEL BEERS HOYT.
One of the best known and most highly respected
citizens of this town died at his home on Jordan-st.,
in this village, last Sunday evening, November 17, 1895. For several months he had suffered from
stomach troubles, and had steadily failed in health. The immediate cause of his death was paralysis, with which
he was stricken Sunday morning.
Ezekiel
Beers Hoyt was born in Ridgefield, Conn., March 23, 1823, but had been a
resident of this vicinity all his life, his parents locating on a farm in the
town of Sennett, on the Genesee road, about three
miles east of Auburn, when he was less than a year old, and on this farm he was
reared to manhood. He was one of a
family of thirteen children and at an early age began the struggle of life with
only strong arms, integrity and ambition as his capital. In 1840 he engaged in keeping a country
store in Mottville, conducting the same for about
three years, after which he operated a foundry and machine shop at that place
for many years with success and profit.
Just after the war, in company with the late Thomas Morton, also of Mottville, he constructed the stone woolen mills at
Skaneateles Falls, a few years thereafter disposing of his interest to his
partner.
Mr.
Hoyt was a most methodical man of business--conservative, careful and strictly
honest to the uttermost penny--and was regarded as an able financier,
accumulating by honorable business methods a large estate. His advice and counsel was of value to
all persons who sought it, and they were not few. He was a man of fine appearance and pleasant manners,
unostentatious and charitable, possessing a kindly heart. His family life was beyond reproach,
and he enjoyed providing such home comforts for his household as his tastes
required and his means allowed.
Mr.
Hoyt was first a Whig and afterwards a Republican, but never actively engaging
in politics further than to cast his vote for his convictions.
Mr.
Hoyt was first married in Mottville, October 14,
1851/1852, to Mary E. Delano, who died Jan. 11, 1867, and a second time in
Milwaukee, Wis., July 1, 1872, to Mary J. Wheeler, who survives him, together
with a son by his first wife--Frank D. Hoyt of Mottville--who
have lost a kind husband and father.
Funeral
services were held at his late residence, Wednesday, at 2 P. M., being largely
attended. Interment
in Lake View Cemetery.

Notes for William Hoyt and
Harriet
In
Cleveland, William and Harriet first lived on Water Street, later named West
9th. At the end of the street was
a lighthouse and the old Union Station where the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway was based. At a much later date
the street was raised and the buildings were covered with dirt.
At
the University of Notre Dame in Indiana there is a bell in the steeple, the
largest and most famous of the collection. More than seven feet tall and weighing nearly 16,000 pounds,
the large bell hangs a level below the carillon keyboard room. Made by Bollee
& Sons, it was shipped from France to New York City in 1867. The story goes that when the bell
arrived by train in South Bend, city fathers feared that the combined weight of
the train and bell would collapse the bridge across the Saint Joseph
River. They refused to let the
train cross with its cargo, and the bell had to be floated across the river on
a special barge pulled by oxen.
Today ÒAnthony,Ó as the bell is referred to around the Basilica, rings
solo only on Ash Wednesday and other solemn occasions. Originally the bell was rung by hand,
taking six ÒheftyÓ Notre Dame students to get it swinging. The great bell is now
rung exclusively by an exterior clapper.
William
Hoyt, as freight conductor, was in charge of this bell as it was transported on
what was then known as the Lake Shore Railway. The cost of the bell in France was $4465.20
WILLIAM
HOYT. Of the gentleman whose name
appears at the opening of this sketch, and whose portrait is shown on the
opposite page, it may be said that he is unquestionably one of the oldest
conductors now in the employ of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway
Company,--as his service with the precursors of this
road which now forms part thereof, dates back to November 1, 1855, when he
accepted a position on the Cleveland & Toledo Railroad, which now forms the
Toledo Division of this great consolidated system. Our subject was born at Addison, New York, and is a son of
Nathan G. and Harriet Hoyt.
Nathan
Hoyt was also a native of New York State, and at Marcellus, New York, he
resided for a period of eighteen years; he then came west to Lorain county,
Ohio (in 1852), and settled at Penfield, where he spent his remaining
days. His trade was that of a
cabinet maker, at which he was quite successful. William HoytÕs mother was a native of the state of
Connecticut, and her union with Mr. Hoyt resulted in the birth of six children,
namely: William; Norton, who resides in Norwalk, Ohio; Hannah J., who is the
wife of James Penfield; Mary, who is the wife of T. B. Prentice, of Boston,
Massachusetts; S. T., who has been a conductor on the Lake Shore & Michigan
Southern Railway and its predecessor, for the past thirty-five years, and
resides at Elyria, Ohio; and Henry, who lives in the state of Colorado.
William
Hoyt left home November 1, 1855, and, at Grafton, Ohio, he commenced working as
a brakeman on the C. & T. R. R.; this position he held for about fifteen
months, when he was advanced to a local freight run. Five years later he was again advanced, this time, to a
through freight run, and for the next five years he made his usual freight run
and occasionally took out a passenger.
His next promotion was to be a regular passenger conductor, in 1862,* and since that time he has been running over the Toledo
Division in one of the fast passenger trains.
The
subject of this sketch was married, in 1857, to Harriet Roberts, of Warren,
Ohio, and three children have been born to them: William; Lillian; and Ida. William, a baggageman on the Lake
Shore & Michigan Southern Railway, married Mary White, and has one child,--Ethel. Our
subject is a prominent member of the F. & A. M., Cleveland Lodge No. 15. Though Mr. Hoyt has attained an
advanced age, he is, nevertheless, well preserved, and has the activity of men
many years his juniors. His long
service as a passenger conductor, and his jovial disposition, have made him a
favorite with those who ride on his train over the Toledo Division and he is
very popular among his fellow railroad men, as he is, also, with the officials
of the road.

HARD
WORK.
Conductors
on the different roads __?__-ing
in Toledo, have considerable hard work attending to the care and comfort of
their passengers at the present time.
Last evening conductor William Hoyt brought in on his train fourteen
coaches from Toledo, so completely packed with passengers that it was next to
impossible to pass through the car.
He is entitled to the thanks of the passengers for his politeness and
courtesy.
(paper and date not known)
William
Hoyt of Cleveland, Ohio, has been the guest of relatives in Sennett
the past week. He spent his
boyhood days in Marcellus, but for forty-five years past has been in the
service of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroad serving forty-one
years as conductor, and is still in active service.
(paper and date not known)
In
1879 William Hoyt was part of the crowd of 300 people who stood shivering on
Public Square in downtown Cleveland.
Charles F. Brush, local inventor of the old arc light, hung 12 lights on
poles 150 feet above the square known as monument Park. The lights were a
little bigger than a bowling ball.
In 1879 horses reared, people cheered, and a cannon roared when the
bright lights went on. It
was six months before EdisonÕs electric light.21

between Cleveland and Toledo, as a brakeman, and later he became a passenger

AN INCIDENT OF WAR
In
the fall of 1862 there had been great suffering and death among the volunteers
in ___ndartÕs Battery, 1st O.V.I. in which were many
Penfield boys but not one thing of the comfortable delicacies constantly being
sent by the tireless auxiliary of the SoldiersÕ Aid Society had ever reached
camp or cot of her own boys. Samuel
Knapp, (familiarly known as ÒCommissioner KnappÓ and ÒSquire KnappÓ) staunch
patriot and veteran of the War of 1812, volunteered to go through the lines to
Nashville and take along supplies needed and personally deliver them. Levi Smith had lost a son in the
hospital there about whom only meager accounts had been obtained, and he also
went.
A
few days after Mr. KnappÕs return serious illness developed, and Hannah Peters
in neighborly kindness went in to assist these friends of her father and
mother. This is not hearsay or
tradition, for the writer was one of that anxious group,
who awaited the verdict of the doctors, Johns and Campbell, as to what ailed
Ògrandfather,Ó who was growing delirious, and with the morning they had a
clearly developed case of smallpox.
Elisha Sheldon and W. L. Hayes, who had
watched with the sick man had varioloid,
and the youngest son of each took the disease from them, and the anxiety and
monotony of that two months quarantine is yet in the remembrance of those who
shared it. Mrs. Knapp came down
with smallpox. Edwin P. Hayes and
wife, Cara Hayes, a few months married, closed their home and with the help of
one immune nursed both Mr. and Mrs. Knapp through the long weeks of illness,
severe as could be and not be fatal, without taking the disease.
Young
Mrs. Vanvalkenburg, also a bride of a few months, and
who was one of those to proffer help and sympathy was hurried away to
Litchfield, but already had caught the infection, and a little later died and
there was a midnight burial.
Mr Knapp survived his wife, who lived ten years but never
stood or walked again; and Hannah Peters,
who had varioloid, was transformed from an unusually
healthy, blooming girl to one who, although she resisted invalidism, was the
victim of almost every form of suffering, dating from the disease which
blighted her whole after life, culminating in blindness before her death. The indirect sacrifices made during
periods of war and not taken into account, if those were also rewarded, no
country could pay its war debt or keep up its pension roll. There are graves of
women who periled their lives in the cause of liberty to whom the tribute of a
flag or flower on Memorial day would not be inappropriate; and few soldiers
paid more dearly for patriotic service than Sarah Hayes Knapp the generous,
active, skillful woman who could never use hand or feet again, and Hannah Peters Hoyt who gave her youth
and strength, practically laid down her life that she might help others. M.H.H.

Obituary
DEATH OF MRS. NORTON G. HOYT
Hannah,
only sister of David J. Peters, and wife of N. G. Hoyt, died at her home in
Norwalk, July 11th, 1901.
She
was the daughter of Richard and Stattra Peters and
was born in Harpersfield, N. Y., sixty-one years ago
on the 15th of May; came with her parents to Penfield, O., in 1852 where she
lived until her marriage, Nov. 3, 1863.
Until their removal to Norwalk in the fall of 1897 nearly all their
married life was spent in Wellington, where according to her wishes her body
was laid to rest. Rev. E. T.
Hagerman, who had known them in...her
in sickness, conducted funeral services at the home in Norwalk and Rev. R. L.
Waggoner officiated at the burial.
After nearly thirty-nine years of invalidism and in the last ten weeks
almost unparalleled suffering the release of the spirit was to her joyfully
anticipated and infinite gain, encouragement. Courageous, faithful, patient, considerate of others and
efficient, she was always planning for those about her, pleasures and enjoyment
in which by reason of her feebleness she could not share. She was the object of her husbandÕs
devoted attention, solitude and sympathy.
The manner of her loss of health is referred to elsewhere in his paper. At intervals she grew stronger, and her
most active participation in church relations was perhaps during the pastorate
of W. C. Dawson, when with her husband she united with the church, and
frequently in the...testimony to the faith which was with her a vital
experience and abiding comfort.

Notes for Samuel T. Hoyt
Obituary:
Samuel
Tompkins Hoyt was born in Marcellus, N. Y., July 18th,
1842; died in Elyria, August 15th, 1896, aged fifty-four years twenty-seven
days. He served his country in the
days of its peril. In fact, in the
hardships and exposures of those far off days was laid the foundation of that
sickness which after a protracted and most painful illness finally terminated
his earthly career.
After
the perils of the camp and of soldier life in defense of his country, he chose
as his work that one of the most responsible and dangerous vocations known to
our busy life, that of the railroad service. The average age of those in the capacity in which he served
is about a dozen years, yet he had been in this service for thirty years. Special temptations as well as special
perils come to the railroad man, but through all of these Samuel Tompkins Hoyt
came with an untarnished character.
He enjoyed the confidence of his employers and the love and esteem of
companions and fellows in service.
And
would you know how this man, your friend and comrade, died? He died in faith. The atmosphere of his sick chamber was
the atmosphere of prayer and of communion with God. He talked with God as a friend talks with friend. Death had no terrors to him. In the love and faith of Jesus Christ
he had conquered death. Through all of the dangers and perils
which this life has passed our brother was at last permitted in his own
home, surrounded by his loved ones, to lie down in the tender foldings of divine love and human love, and be gathered to
his fathers. It remained for us to
tenderly bear his wasted body away to its last resting place, which was done on
Monday.
At
the last sad rites a large number of relatives and friends gathered to bid a
final adieu, rev. D D. DeLong
officiating.
Mr.
HoytÕs many yearsÕ residence in Elyria makes this loss as a citizen only harder
to bear. He died respected by all
and without an enemy.
The
following gentlemen in the employ of the Lake Shore Company were in attendance
at the funeral: F. A. Wyman,
auditor passenger receipts; M. E. Tully, auditor freight receipts; B. L.
Reynolds, chief dispatcher; J. W. Gault, Charles
Goodwin, chief clerk division superintendent; also conductors L. Styles, E. D.
Page, Wm. Muchler, J. V. Lutts,
Harry Knapp, train master G. W. Johnson, general yard master, Sam Davis, W. H.

Notes for Ethelyn
Hoyt & Dewitt Howard
Ethelyn spent the first 12 years of her life on the West
Side of Cleveland at 57 Scott Street.
She attended Kentucky School.
When they moved to Strongsville in 1904 it was hard for her to get used
to the one-room school house she attended in Beebetown. She
was not used to the noise and confusion of all the grades together. After 8th grade she attended one year
of high school in Berea, OH. When
they moved to Strongsville in 1904, she helped her father plant an apple
orchard on the west side of their land.
They also had a few peach, pear, and plum trees. She told me about Grandad
taking potatoes into Cleveland and selling them in the neighborhoods. She would take apples along and give to
the children.
After
she married Dewitt Howard they continued to live with her parents. They both lived in the house the rest
of their lives.
In
the 1930s and again in the late 1940s they vacationed in Michigan, near
Mesick. In 1936 they went to
Niagara Falls and Canada with their new 1936 Dodge. In 1941 they drove to Florida. The above was told to me by my grandmother. (Louise Varisco)
